How can you change the sizes of jewellery?

Wondering how to adjust the size of your jewellery is a common question, whether you’ve been gifted a piece that doesn’t fit, inherited a family heirloom that you want to wear, or simply changed your size over time. From resizing rings to shortening bracelets and necklaces, jewellers can usually ensure your jewellery is a perfect fit. Let’s go over all the ways you can ensure your jewellery fits seamlessly.

Resizing rings: a tailored fit

Rings are often the most common type of jewellery requiring resizing. Whether they’re too loose or too tight, a professional jeweller can adjust the band to fit your finger perfectly.

  • Reducing ring size: To make a ring smaller, a section of the band is removed, and the ends are soldered back together. This method maintains the integrity and appearance of the ring.
  • Making a ring larger: Enlarging a ring can be a little trickier than making it smaller, but in most cases, it’s still possible. To enlarge a ring, a jeweller will cut the band at the back and add a new piece of metal to increase its circumference. This process requires skill to ensure the addition is seamless and matches the original metal, and it’s important to note that it is also not always possible when the band is a full eternity of diamonds.

Shortening bracelets and necklaces: perfecting length

Adjusting the length of bracelets and necklaces can transform an unwearable piece into a staple of your daily wardrobe.

  • Removing links: For chain bracelets or necklaces, a jeweller can remove one or more links to achieve the desired length. This process is straightforward and does not affect the overall design of the piece.
  • Adjustable clasps: Adding an adjustable clasp is another solution for varying the length of necklaces or bracelets. This allows for flexibility in how the piece is worn, accommodating different outfits and preferences.

Adjusting earrings: for comfort

While rings, bracelets, and necklaces are the most common pieces to be resized, earrings and other types of jewellery can sometimes also be adjusted for a better, more comfortable fit.

  • Earring backs: Changing the backs of earrings (for example, from butterfly backs to screw backs) can provide a more secure and comfortable fit. Sometimes this can be an easy change as earrings are generally quite ‘one size fits all’, but in other cases, you might need to consult a jeweller.

Considerations when resizing jewellery

Before thinking about altering your jewellery, there are a few important factors to consider:

  • Material and design: Some materials and designs are more challenging to adjust than others. For example, rings with intricate patterns or stones set all the way around may be more difficult to resize without affecting the design, and your jeweller may advise purchasing a new piece of jewellery instead.
  • Value and authenticity: Resizing or altering highly valuable jewellery has the prospect to affect its value, so it’s always important to consult a reputable jewellery.
  • Quality of workmanship: Ensure that any adjustments are carried out by a skilled and experienced jeweller. Poor workmanship can damage the piece and affect its aesthetic and structural integrity, meaning you could lose stones (or the piece entirely!) if it were to become loose after poor work.
