Proposals

Can you wait too long to propose?

Can you wait too long to propose?

There is no right or wrong time to propose – it is entirely up to you as a couple, and what suits your relationship, your goals, and where you are in your lives. However, when a few years have passed, and you’ve had all the necessary conversations around marriage, you partner might start getting antsy for a proposal. Here’s our advice for ensuring you don’t wait too long to propose.

How do I know if my partner wants me to propose?

Communication is key in a relationship, and if it’s the right time, you’ll likely have had – or will start to have – conversations around the future and what that would look like. You may have already chatted about a proposal, and what their dream engagement ring would look like. But if this isn’t the case, it might be a good idea to bring it up yourself and ask them if they see marriage in your future. Most times, if your partner wants you to propose, they’ll likely have already discussed the prospect, or will have even dropped hints. You can even chat to their best friends and family, as they are the people your partner will have most likely had these discussions with.

What might happen if I wait too long to propose?

As we say, there is no ‘right’ time in a relationship to propose – for some couples it’s 6 months, for some it’s 6 years. However, if you do intent to propose at some point, and discuss the prospect with your partner, they might start to get annoyed if years and years begin to pass – especially if their peers begin to get engaged and married, too. If your partner feels you’re ‘dragging your feet’, or not responding to their needs, they might begin to feel resentment, like you’re non-committal, or that you don’t value the relationship as much. Therefore, it’s so important to communicate with your partner your decisions – no one likes to spoil the surprise of an engagement by setting a date and time, but it can be useful to discuss timelines, so that everyone has realistic expectations.
