What Order Do You Wear Engagement and Wedding Rings — and Why?

What Order Do You Wear Engagement and Wedding Rings — and Why?

You’ve said yes, the big day is approaching, and now you’re thinking about the little details. So if you’re wondering: what’s the right way to wear your rings? Here’s the short answer — and why the tradition exists (plus, some modern alternatives if you want to switch things up).

The Traditional Ring Order

Left hand, ring finger:

Why?

Traditionally, your wedding ring goes on first because it symbolises your official bond, it’s the one you receive during the ceremony.

So what Happens During the Ceremony?

A quick tip: If you’re already wearing your engagement ring on your left hand, move it to your right hand before the ceremony. After exchanging rings, you can slide it back on top of the wedding band. Alternatively, skip wearing the engagement ring for the nuptials and put it back on right after.

Modern Takes on Ring Order

It’s your day — and your jewellery. Some brides (and grooms!) are rethinking the traditional stack.

Alternative options:

  • Wear the engagement ring first, then the wedding ring
  • Wear the engagement ring on the right hand, wedding band on the left
  • Alternate depending on the day, mood, or outfit
  • Opt for no wedding band at all, some couples get matching alternative jewellery pieces or even tattoos!

What About Eternity Bands or Ring Stacks?

If you’re adding more rings over time — like an eternity band or anniversary ring — there’s no one “correct” order. Some people:

  • Stack chronologically (wedding, then eternity)
  • Place the most sparkly ring in the centre
  • Place the most expensive (ie, engagement) ring closest to the body and layer rings on top of it, to keep it as safe as possible
  • Alternate metals and shapes for contrast
  • Switch up your stack as you add to it in years to come, alternating rings and fingers whenever you feel like it

It’s Your Decision

There’s tradition — and then there’s what feels right for you and your partner. Whether you wear your rings by the book or create your own stack style, the only rule that matters is that it feels meaningful and comfortable.
