Famous Celebrity Marriage Proposals

Whilst it’s sadly a statistic that most celebrities will end up marrying another celebrity rather than a mere mortal, it’s still surprising just what lengths some celebs are prepared to go to in creating a special, romantic marriage proposal for the one they love.

Celebrities who deserve a special mention include Ellen DeGeneres’ proposal to her girlfriend Portia Rossi, but think of sweet, romantic proposals and you’re sure to also think of Johnny Cash and June Carter, or Matthew McConaughey and Camilla Alves. Whilst celebrity marriages don’t always last, one thing is for sure, most celebrities are not short of effort and imagination when it comes to popping the question!

Be inspired by your favourite celebrities and you could create a Hollywood-style proposal for the one you love; proposals don’t have to cost a fortune, and some of the loveliest celebrity proposals are the ones which are simple and heartfelt.

Be inspired by Ellen Degeneres proposal to Portia de Rossi

Ellen Degeneres Proposal

Although they began dating in 2004, Ellen DeGeneres didn’t propose to her girlfriend Portia de Rossi until shortly after the California Supreme Court ruled in favour of same-sex marriages.

The couple, who had planned to spend the rest of their lives together but hadn’t discussed marriage, were relaxing at home one day after Portia had rescued a goldfish from a TV shoot. As she sat next to Ellen, watching the fish swim round its new bowl, Ellen said, ‘This is a pretty romantic moment, right?’

Portia replied, ‘Every moment with you is romantic.’ That was the cue for Ellen to pop the question, presenting Portia with a three carat marquise-cut diamond ring accented with small pink diamonds, designed by jeweller-to-the-stars Neil Lane.

This celebrity proposal just goes to show that sometimes the sweetest, most romantic proposals are the simple, uncomplicated ones that take place when your partner least expects it!

Be inspired by Pink’s proposal to Carey Hart

Pink proposal

Everyone knew that Pink wasn’t the kind of girl to accept a traditional marriage proposal, but she still surprised people when she took things into her own hands in 2005.

Motocross star Carey Hart met the singer in 2001 and they have had a notoriously tempestuous relationship. The day they met at the 2001 X Games event, Carey fell 40ft, breaking 14 bones. Two months later they got together.

After 4 years of dating on and off, Pink proposed at one of his races by holding up a sign saying, ‘Will you marry me?’ It seems Hart initially thought she was joking and carried on doing another lap. When she added the words, ‘I’m serious’, he pulled over and came to give her a hug. A few months later, they were married in Costa Rica.

If you’re planning to propose to your man, do it in style like Pink!

Matthew McConaughey proposal to Camilla Alves

Matthew McConaughey proposal

Not all celebrity proposals go smoothly, as actor Matthew McConaughey found out when he proposed to his girlfriend of 6 years, Camilla Alves.

Matthew decided to pop the question at Christmas, surrounded by family, and was obviously confident that his long-term girlfriend would say yes! His family took turns to open their Christmas gifts and Matthew saved the best for last, wrapping the engagement ring in a series of 8 boxes, so it would take Camilla time to open it.

When she finally opened the box, he called the family around and dropped to one knee, asking her to marry him. Unfortunately for Matthew, the longest minute of his life followed, as he didn’t get an immediate yes! However, he stayed down on one knee and eventually she gave him the answer he was looking for.

This celebrity proposal story just goes to show you can’t guarantee what her answer will be!

Be inspired By Tom Cruise’s proposal to Katie Holmes

tom cruise katie holmes proposal

They might no longer be married, but everyone was surprised when Tom Cruise proposed to Katie Holmes. When they initially began dating, many claimed the couple’s relationship was nothing more than a publicity stunt, with the 16 year age gap between the two doing little to quell journalist’s scepticism.

However, it soon became clear that this was true love. Only three months after going public with their relationship, the actor (42) proposed to Katie (26) at the top of the Eiffel Tower in Paris early one June morning in 2005. Perhaps a bit of a clichéd spot for a proposal, but it’s certainly considered one of the most romantic places on the planet!

The couple had a daughter named Suri, although sadly they divorced in 2012. If you want to take a leaf out of Tom Cruise’s book, why not propose to the one you love at the Eiffel Tower?

Be inspired by Seal’s proposal to Heidi Klum in 2004

seal to heidi klum proposal

There was a distinct chill in the air when Seal proposed to his Victoria’s Secret model girlfriend Heidi Klum in 2004. On December 23rd, after the couple had been dating for about a year, they flew to the ski resort of Whistler in British Columbia, Western Canada, for a holiday.

It was here that Seal popped the question, in an igloo which he had arranged to be specially built for the proposal, in a snow cave, on a glacier, at 14,000 feet. Now that’s what we call a grand gesture proposal! Of course, Heidi was overcome by the effort he’d put in and the romance of the moment – the proposal took place in uncharted territory, so the couple were totally alone on the glacier as Seal declared his love.

After the proposal, the couple were obviously feeling the chill, as they flew straight to sunny Mexico, where Seal owns a house.

The public proposal of Johnny Cash to June Carter

Jonny Cash Proposal

Country icon Johnny Cash met June Carter backstage at the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville, Tennessee, in 1955. Whilst their courtship was rather unconventional, they were friends long before they got together, and June helped Johnny throughout his problems with drug addiction, which continued for much of his life.

In 1968, 13 years after they first met, he proposed to June onstage at a performance at the London Ice House hockey arena in Ontario, Canada. After they sang their duet, Johnny stopped the show and asked June ‘Will you marry me?’ Her response was ‘Go on, sing another, sing another.’ Johnny replied ‘I’m not gonna sing until you answer me – will you marry me?’ It took three more attempts before June finally realised he was serious and said yes!

This just goes to show that sometimes you need to persist to get what you want; however hopefully your proposal will get a ‘yes’ the first time!
