Coloured gems were least favoured by celebs
The Kate Middleton effect seems to be fading as this year we spotted only two celeb engagement rings with coloured gemstones.
However, both of them are absolutely stunning so they deserve a place in the Top 20.
#20 – Kara Tointon’s Ruby Ring
Actress Kara Tointon is best known for her role as Dawn Swann in EastEnders, and as the 2010 winner of Strictly Come Dancing.
Kara announced her engagement to Norwegian chiropractor boyfriend, Marius Jensen, in October 2018.
As we write this, she is just two days away from her 22nd November due date and showing a gorgeous baby bump. Congratulations!
#19 – Princess Eugenie’s Papardscha sapphire
Read our extensive report on Princess Euegenie’s ring in our article 9 Engagement Rings in the Royal Family.
Princess Eugenie was engaged to Jack Brooksbank in January 2018.
Her ring showcases a rare peach-coloured papardscha sapphire, with diamonds, in yellow gold.
Papardscha sapphires are very expensive and we estimate the ring’s value to be up to £100K.
If you want a similar one but don’t have that kind of budget, a pink sapphire ring is a superb choice. Here’s one in a style similar to Princess Eugenie’s.
CLASSIC SOLITAIRE CATEGORY
The round diamond is here to stay
The classic round solitaire has not lost its appeal, and we saw several celebrities opting for this traditional engagement ring style in 2018, although it wasn’t as prominent as other, much blingier styles.
However, we believe you just can’t beat a classic solitaire for sophistication and beauty.
#18 -Felicity Jones’s enormous round solitaire in gold
After two years of dating, Star Wars Rogue One actress, Felicity Jones, got engaged to her film director boyfriend, Charles Guard.
Felicity’s engagement ring with its single round diamond is simple, yet utterly glamorous.
This ring too features a yellow gold band – the upward trend this year.
#17 – Ellie Goulding’s gorgeous round solitaire with sidestones
Singer-songwriter Ellie Goulding is most famous for her single Love Me Like You Do, which she composed for the film Fifty Shades of Grey.
Her engagement to art dealer boyfriend Caspar Joplin was announced in the Times in August 2018.
Ellie’s stunning solitaire ring features a round diamond held in a four claw platinum setting.
What’s more, there are diamond sidestones on the band for extra sparkle.
#16 Jeremy Kyles’s classic round “solitaire-cluster”
For a long time, Jeremy Kyle kept silent on his relationship to his children’s former nanny, Vicky Burton.
However, he finally announced the engagement while presenting Good Morning Britain in February 2018.
Vicky’s sparkling ring has been cleverly crafted from a cluster of smaller diamonds, made to look like one huge solitaire ring. The band is beautiful white gold.
This is a fantastic option if you want a ‘big solitaire look’ at an affordable price.
SQUARE DIAMONDS CATEGORY
Celebs are LOOOVING this geometric diamond shape!
Next up is a very prominent celeb ring choice – the square diamond. Did you know that this style looks particularly elegant if you have long fingers.
#15 – Rio Ferdinand’s stunning princess cut solitaire
Our absolute favourite celeb love story this year is that of Rio Ferdinand and new girlfriend, Kate Wright.
In 2015, Ferdinand was left devastated when his wife, Rebecca, tragically passed away from breast cancer. She was only 34, leaving him with three young children.
At the beginning of November 2018, Ferdinand announced the happy news of his engagement to the Only Way is Essex star, Kate Wright. The proposal in Dubai was lovely and involved his three children.
#14 – Priyanka Chopra’s eye-catching square diamond
In August 2018 news broke about the engagement of Priyanka Chopra, Indian actress and singer.
One of Meghan Markle’s close friends, she was also seen at the Royal wedding earlier this year.
Priyanka’s fiancée, Nick Jonas, is an American singer originally known as a member of the band Jonas Brothers.
Her ring is an enourmous princess cut diamond on a white gold band. Classic and elegant, it has a sparkling and luxurious look.
#13 and #12 – Michelle Williams’s & Chloe Madeley’s Square Halo Rings
We saw two very similar square diamond rings; one worn by Destiny’s Child singer, Michelle Williams.
The other by Chloe Madeley, the fitness expert and journlaist, who also happens to be the daughter of This Morning’s Richard and Judy.
Michelle Williams (above) announced that she is engaged to pastor and life coach Chad Johnson in April 2018, and flaunted this stunning whopper of a ring in white gold!
In the meantime, Chloe and boyfriend James Haskell, the England and Wasps rugby star, also got engaged in April 2018 (below) and their ring is surprisingly similar.
Both rings looks exquisite with a large square diamond in the middle, a diamond halo around the main stone, and a split shank band that parts as it reaches the centre stone setting.
TRILOGY RING CATEGORY
Three-diamond rings are definitely on trend, and we’ll give you one royal guess as to why…
It’s hardly surprising this ring style is racing to the lead. After all, it’s the one Prince Harry proposed to Meghan Markle with.
#11 – Love Island’s Caroline Flack flaunted a trilogy ring
The three diamonds in a trilogy engagement ring represent the couple’s past, present and future together.
Sadly, however, Love Island’s Caroline Flack and Andrew Brady, the star of Apprentice and Celebrity Big Brother, broke off their April 2018 whirlwind engagement only five months later.
However, we can still feast our eyes on her gorgeous diamond trilogy ring.
Three diamonds are better than one when it comes to sparkle, guaranteeing you a sumptuous look. Caroline’s ring is set on a white gold band.
#9 and #10 – John Stamos and Caitlin McHugh – plus Spencer Matthews and Vogue William – both couples with vintage style trilogy rings
With a really eye-catching variations on the trilogy ring, actor John Stamos who played Uncle Jesse in Full House announced his engagement to model Caitlin McHugh a year ago.
And just in case you were still holding a torch, ladies, we’re sorry to tell you Uncle Jesse is now offficially off the market as the couple got married in February 2018.
The Made in Chelsea star, Spencer Matthews, proposed to the Irish model and television personality, Vogue Williams, in February 2018 with this jaw dropping vintage style trilogy ring.
#8 – Meghan Markle’s three-diamond ring that nods to Princess Diana’s memory
This is in our opinion the best of the trilogy rings we have ever seen.
If you want every detail, we have dedicated an entire article to Meghan’s gorgeous ring here, including how Harry designed it and the connection to princess Diana.
Needless to say this was the biggest engagement announcement in the last twelve months and the Royal Wedding this spring was watched by more than 50 million people.
Meghan’s ring features a cushion cut diamond in the centre and two round diamonds either side on a yellow gold band. We have crafted a beautiful collection inspired by this very design.
PEAR SHAPED DIAMOND CATEGORY
The pear shaped diamond was the most popular celebrity ring choice by far in 2018
As we went through this year’s engagements, it became ovewhelmingly clear that the most popular ring style chosen by celebrities this year was the pear shaped diamond.
#7 – Harry Kane, the Tottenham striker, went for this style
Tottenham star and England captain, Harry Kane, celebrated his engagement to Katie Goodland, his childhood sweetheart and mother of his daughter.
What a ring it is! A huge pear shaped diamond held in a white gold setting, the proposal took place last July 2017. Could this mean Kane started the trend?
#6 – Game of Thrones actress Sophie Turner flaunts a unique pear shaped diamond ring
Another Jonas brother got engaged in 2018! Singer and actor Joe Jonas proposed to Sophie Turner, who plays Sansa Stark in Game of Thrones.
Unlike his brother Nick who proposed to Priyanka Chopra (see above) with a square solitaire, Joe opted for the trendier pear shaped diamond.
Sophie’s diamond ring is unique with two beautiful diamond ecrusted bands in white gold, showcasing the large pear shaped diamond in the centre in a claw setting.
#4 and #5 – Paris Hilton’s and Ariana Grandes’s pear shaped diamonds biggest of all – but sadly both love stories have come to an end
By now, you’ve probably heard that heiress Paris Hilton’s engagement to actor and model Chris Zylka has been called off – and Hilton is reportedly refusing to give back the $2 million pear shaped engagement ring he proposed to her with in Aspen in January 2018.
This ring has made headlines all year long, since Paris had to hire extra security to protect the diamond and reportedly had three replicas made so she could travel and appear in public safely without risking theft of the real one.
According to the press, the couple have not seen each other since they split up, but it’s been reported that Zylka has asked for the ring back.
The second pear shaped ring to be returned to the fiancé was the one which American actor and comedian Pete Davidson proposed to singer Ariana Grande with in June 2018.
Pete told GQ magazine that it all started as a joke. “The day I met her, I was like, ‘Hey, I’ll marry you tomorrow,’ ” Pete told GQ.
Ariana apparently called his bluff and he then sent her pictures of engagement rings and asked which ones she liked. Ariana said the pear shaped rings were her favourite ones.
The diamond is said to have cost Pete around $100,000.
Unfortunately, the two have officially called off their engagement and Ariana has reportedly returned the ring to Pete.
#3 – Cardi B’s incredibly large pear shaped diamond
You’ve got to love Cardi B, the Grammy Award-nominated rapper and songwriter, who has taken US and UK charts by storm.
Cardi also got engaged and married last year and we can hardly ignore her luxurious ring, which is in fact very similar to Paris Hilton’s.
P.S. We’re sad to report an ending to this love story too, with Cardi B separating from fellow rapper, Offset, only months after giving birth to their child in July 2018.
#2 – Coronation Street star Sam Aston’s pear shaped engagement ring
Samuel Aston, the actor best known for playing Chesney Brown in Coronation Street, also chose to propose to his girlfriend Briony Gardner with a pear shaped halo diamond ring in white gold.
This ring looks really beautiful on Briony, and we love the way it elongates the finger making the hand look elegant – especially with her gorgeous sparkly nails!
1# – Jenson Button’s classic pear shaped diamond
Former Formula One driver, Jenson Button, is engaged, congratulations!
We love this ring he gave his girlfriend, Californian model Brittny Ward. It’s got the perfect balance of shape, size, sparkle and elegance.
Jenson dated Brittny since March 2016 before he popped the question.
The ring he gave her displays a large pear-shaped diamond in the centre, with a diamond halo set in white gold. It’s our absolute fave!
Before you go… Discover our prediction for the new diamond ring trend to hit 2020
The pear shaped ring has certainly proved to be the most popular this year. Starting in 2017 with Harry Kane’s engagement and making headlines all through 2019, we expect this trend to last a while longer.
Also, the Meghan Markle style three-diamond ring is also a fashionable celebrity choice that we’re going to see lots more of, while the classic solitaire will never go out of style.
However, here at The Diamond Store we’ve spotted a new ring fashion that may well become the biggest of them all in 2020… the marquise cut:
Above is Victoria Pattison, the British TV personality best known for appearing in the show Geordie Shore. Although sadly the latest reports are that this celebrity engagement too is off the ring style is undoubtedly gorgeous and we think we’ll see a lot more of these in the coming year.
On that note, we leave you with one final “lookalike ring” so you can decide for yourself.
